Every day, I spend a lot of time at work in front of a computer. Working in a poorly lit room can be a pain in the eyes. When BenQ reached out and sent me this product, this was actually the first time I’ve ever seen anything like this. I was skeptical about it, and my first impression was it’s a weird product. However, as I assembled the BenQ ScreenBar Plus and used it for a week, I found out that it is amazing! It is probably the most advanced desktop e-reading LED lamp on the market right now and I will tell you why.
What is the BenQ ScreenBar Plus?
The BenQ ScreenBar Plus is essentially a lamp that sits on top of your monitor. It is an 18-inch bar with LED lighting that can be powered via USB ports. The LED light provides 500 lux of lighting, in one of eight different color temperatures ranging from warm 2700k to cool 6500k. It meets IEEE PAR1789 standards for regulating flicker and is IEC/TR 62778 certified to be free of blue-light risk.
The genius of this product lies in its ability to position itself. Out of the box, it comes with a clamp that allows the BenQ ScreenBar Plus to be attached on top of the monitor screen. The clamp is very easy to install and does not require any screws that will damage your monitor. Literally, the BenQ ScreenBar Plus does not take any space on your desk.
While the BenQ ScreenBar Plus sits on top of your monitor, it does not cover anything in your line of sight. The wire that powers it also runs from the back of the monitor to give you a clear view of the monitor. Meanwhile, the lamp is now at a good angle to give you the best lighting you can have while you’re using your desktop.
The BenQ ScreenBar comes with 2 variants, the more expensive variant is called BenQ ScreenBar Plus and comes with a control dial. The control dial allows you to control the brightness and temperature of the light without ever having to stand up. Without this dial, the controls are built in on top of the device.
Anyone who uses a lamp beside their desktop knows this problem. When you put a lamp beside your monitor, the lights will reflect and cause glare on the monitor screen. Sometimes, even ceiling lights do this and there’s nothing you can do about it but to find a good angle on your monitor. BenQ ScreenBar Plus isn’t just a space saver. The ScreenBar has an asymmetrical optical design that only illuminates the desk and ensures zero reflective glare off the screen. The light covers up to 3 to 4 keyboards away which is more than enough for your desk.
BenQ ScreenBar is actually very considerate for your eyes. Designed to avoid eye strain, a built-in ambient light sensor is installed which adjusts the brightness level automatically. You can also adjust the brightness manually using the touch sensor control on the device.
Also, the maximum brightness of the ScreenBar Plus is not that bright. Too much brightness also harms your eyes which is why they have limited the brightness on this device. The light gently blends into the environment so it has a cool effect on your eyes. Lastly, neither the cool or warm light options will affect the colors on your monitor.
BenQ ScreenBar Plus Review
Rating: 9 of out 10
I give this product a rating of 9 out of 10. After a week of using the BenQ ScreenBar Plus, I keep wondering, why didn’t anyone invent this earlier. It is a very ingenious, yet simple solution to the lighting problems in your desk. Consumes very little electricity and doesn’t take up any space at all. Moreover, the built-in ambient light sensor is very intelligent that will take care of your eyes. I actually think every desk needs this product. Although in the near future, I hope they make more size variants. Some people opt to use HD TV as monitors, and also for laptop screens. You can purchase the BenQ ScreenBar Plus at Amazon.com.
