Razer Phone 2

Razer is one of the world’s leading manufacturer of high-performance gaming hardware, software, and systems. They were one of the first, if not the first, to come up with a gaming smartphone. They released their first ever smartphone back in November 2017. This phone was dedicated to gaming but was a very capable and comfortable daily phone to use. Surely, the reception was good enough that Razer developed the second generation of the product which is the Razer phone 2.

The Razer Phone 2 has all the essential specifications of a premium flagship smartphone for everyday use. It has SnapDragon 845 chipset, 8 GB of RAM, and a 64GB storage space. In addition, It runs on Android 8.1 with a free Nova Launcher Prime Razer Edition which gives you the closest experience to stock android.

It has a 5.72 inch LCD display with a 1,440x2560px resolution with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Similar to the first generation, the Razer phone 2 still packs the Razer’s UltraMotion technology. A 120hz refresh rate which offers the fastest screen in mobile gaming ever. Also, the front-facing speakers equipped on this phone gives them the loudest speakers on a mobile phone.

The fingerprint scanner is still on the power button on the side of the phone. The Razer Phone was one of the very first smartphones to implement this. As an upgrade to its predecessor, it now has wireless charging capability and an IP67 rating. It is also important to note, that the Razer Phone 2 does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

A massive 4,000mah battery is inside this awesome phone capable of handling your gaming needs. Unlike other brands, included inside the box is a proper charger that supports its Quick Charge 4.0 technology. They have designed a cooling system that will manage to sustain this high refresh rate for a stable, lag-free gaming experience.

ASUS is one of the biggest household names when it comes to manufacturing computers and mobile phones. Their gaming brand, ROG (Republic of Gamers), has been the world’s leader in PC gaming and overclocking performance. So it’s no surprise that when the company decided to compete and develop their own gaming smartphone, it’s going to be an incredible one.

The ROG Phone is a first generation product. Like any other flagship phones in 2018, it has a SnapDragon 845 chipset, 8GB of RAM and a whopping 128GB of storage. Also, it runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with an ASUS skin on top of it.

They have an insane design right off the bat, and just by looking at it, you’ll instantly know it’s for gaming. It’s sporting a 6-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080×2160 pixels with an aspect ratio of 18:9. Inspired by the Razer Phone, the ROG Phone is equipped with a 90hz refresh rate for a smoother gaming experience. This is the first ever 90hz refresh rate on an AMOLED display. Enclosing this gorgeous screen, are 2 small front-facing speakers that look like a notch.

On the side, you will see 2 more extra USB-C port for accessories like the cooling clip that is included inside the box. This clip acts as an extra cooling device for a longer session, which won’t hinder your phone handling when in landscape mode. The cooling clip also creates a headphone jack on the side of the phone so you can plug a wired headphone in between your hands while playing.

There is a headphone jack on the bottom together with its USB-C port for charging. Lastly, on the back, the ROG Phone has a copper cooling system that looks like a jet wing. The fingerprint scanner is a hexagon shape that is located at the back. To be able to play for a long time, it’s rocking a 4000mah battery. The phone is also equipped with Quick Charging 4.0 and a proper charger right out of the box.

There are so many accessories available for the ASUS ROG phone that is ridiculous for a smartphone. For example, there is an accessory that allows you to play mobile games on your TV or monitor using your phone as the controller. Also, there is a controller like casing which allows you to play your phone in a dual screen mode much like a Nintendo DS. These are just a few examples of what you can do with the ASUS ROG phone with its accessories. If you guys want an in-depth review of these accessories, please write it down on the comment section.

Now that we have the basics specs out of the way, it’s time to truly compare the two amazing phones up against each other.

When it comes to looks, it’’s going to be subjective. Some people don’t like the different design of the ASUS ROG phone, but some also hate the boxy design of the Razer phone. For me, I love what ASUS ROG phone brings to the table. Out of the conventional design, it stands out in a crowd with its signature look.

In addition, the ASUS ROG phone screen is made of AMOLED whereas the Razer Phone is only made out of LCD. As we all know, OLED is supposedly a lot better than LCD when it comes to image quality. When it comes to brightness, Razer is much brighter though for outdoor usage.

Both phones is made of glass front and back, although the ASUS ROG phone does not have wireless charging capabilities. The speakers on the ASUS ROG phone are alot smaller which is more stylish compared to the thick speakers of the Razer Phone 2. However, thanks to its aluminum sides, the Razer Phone 2 looks and feels more durable.

Real Life Use

Aside from gaming, you will also use your phone in real life every day. With this in mind, I really hate the fingerprint sensor of the ASUS ROG phone. It is placed in an awkward position, and the shape is not good for repetitive usage. Unlike the Razer Phone 2, the fingerprint sensor is placed perfectly on the power button on the side.

The Nova launcher skin is also a huge plus for the Razer Phone 2, that gives a pure stock Android experience on the phone. Whereas the ASUS ROG phone has their own skin, and it will take some time for you to get used to.

Surprisingly, the Razer Phone speakers took a step back. They’re as loud as before, but the clarity is not there anymore especially when you compare it to the ASUS ROG speaker. The Razer Phone also has an ip67 rating, while the ASUS ROG phone has no official rating when it comes to water protection.

When it comes to camera, there’s not much difference between the 2. Both have great quality cameras that are fitting for flagship phones these days.

Gaming experience

Alas, this is what it’s all about.

When it comes to playing for an extended period of time, the Razer Phone does a good job of cooling its processor and maintaining its performance speed. Meanwhile, the ASUS ROG phone is one of the hottest smartphones I have ever tested. Which is probably why they included a cooling fan accessory inside the box. Bringing this accessory with you all the time can be a bit annoying, and is very prone for you to lose when you bring it anywhere.

However, the ASUS ROG phone has this very unique feature called the “X MODE”. Squeeze the phone for about 3 seconds and you will be able to enter this mode. Upon activation, the phone clears up RAM and improve efficiency for an optimized gaming experience. While holding your phone in landscape mode, the phone also offers “Air triggers” located on top of your phone. These “air triggers” mimics the L1 R1 buttons on a PlayStation controller and the software will allow you to remap the buttons to whatever function you desire.

Verdict: Top Gaming Smartphone

Razer Phone 2 vs ASUS ROG Phone

It’s very clear that both phones are amazing and have a place in the gaming smartphone genre. However, as the year is about to end, there can only be one winner.

It is also very important to know what kind of features are you looking for in a gaming phone before you decide what to buy. For instance, The Razer Phone 2 has an IP67 rating and wireless charging capability that the ASUS ROG phone doesn’t have. If these things are deal breakers to you, then the Razer Phone 2 is the clear choice for you. Similarly, the ASUS ROG Phone has a headphone jack and an OLED screen panel which the other one doesn’t have.

For me, my personal choice would be the ASUS ROG Phone. I mean, the entire point of a gaming phone is playing games. While the Razer Phone is a very good phone, I just can’t ignore the sound quality of the speakers of the ASUS ROG phone. After all, who can play games without sounds right?. The ASUS ROG phone also offers a 3.5mm headphone jack which is important to a gamer. The zero latency offered by wired headphones are still better for gaming, despite of the more elegant Bluetooth option.

Furthermore, ASUS ROG phone offers a wide variety of accessories that we haven’t even talked about in this article. Truly, ASUS has nailed a very good gaming phone in their first generation product here. You can purchase the Razer Phone 2 and ASUS ROG  at Amazon.com.
